Almonds are the edible seeds of the almond tree, Prunus dulcis, a species in the rose family. They are technically drupes, like peaches and cherries, but are commonly referred to as nuts. Almonds have a hard shell, which is the endocarp, and contain a single seed inside, the edible kernel. The kernel is usually covered by a brown skin that is often removed before consumption.
