Red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) saplings are fast-growing, deciduous, and hardy, often reaching up to 5 meters in three years. They feature pinnate, bright green leaves, a straight, smooth trunk (becoming rough later), and thrive in full sun, well-drained sandy or red soils. The sapling prefers tropical, hot, and dry climates and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Primarily known for its precious deep-red heartwood, which is highly valued for luxurious, durable furniture and intricate carvings. It is extensively recognized for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda, including skin-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects used to treat acne, blemishes, and skin rashes.
